The 3 M’s of Success is the thirteenth in a series of articles to help you reach your goal. What are your goals? I know you thought about it! You know, it is your dream, wish or resolution you made! Before you can get to where you want to be, you need to know where you are going. You wouldn’t get on a bus, train or plane without knowing where it was going.
Did my parents have a plan for me? If they did, they never let me know! I learned values such as integrity, loyalty, dependability and responsibility. I saw firsthand how these values were important in business; things like being on time, doing what was promised or taking responsibility for mistakes. My parents were in business for 30-40 years in the worst of times and built good businesses without debt. I learned a great deal following their example. Little did I know that I was in a training program! I was learning how to be a good leader/manager.
I remember earning money at seven (7) years old. What did I do with it? I spent it and learned a lot from that. I learned to save so I could do more with it. I started saving very early and live on a lot less. I earned my spending money in college and managed to stretch it by frugal spending. The lesson became a habit and I invested and made it grow. My approach to money came from those early days of frugal living. Learning how to manage your money is an important skill for success.
I never wanted to become a salesman, but we are all sales people. We sell ourselves and never think about it. When you meet someone, don’t you want them to like you? Maybe it is a social or business situation, don’t you want to be accepted or liked. Facebook even uses the term “like”. We are really marketing ourselves that is promoting ourselves to meet an objective. It may be friendship, job interview, career, personal or business relationship or some other objective.
Management is the process of dealing with or controlling things or people. Success is achieving your goal and management is controlling people or things. In order to reach success, you have to control or manage tasks, projects and goals before you can manage someone else. Leaders lead by example and must show that they can control or perform before they can take on the role of managing others or things. Typically, individual performers such as sales people who perform well are promoted to lead a sales team.
Money is any object or record that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services. It is generally accepted as a medium of exchange. Money is something we use daily, but not really understood. If you use money well, you will be a success. Money is another way to view personal finance because money is the basis for it. Little things such as spending less than you earn, saving money, savings or investing are just a few of things you should do with money. Do you know enough about money to use it well? Something that is so important and we spend very little time learning about it. It is left up to each individual to learn about money. What are you doing?
Marketing is the process or technique of promoting, selling and distributing a product or service. Sometimes the product you are marketing is you! When you are in a job interview, you are marketing yourself. In social situations, you are marketing you. You are either promoting yourself for a job, social situations for friendship or because you want something. You may want a date, borrow money or create an image. It is all marketing.
This is the thirteenth article in the series about success; I expect to publish throughout 2012. There will be twenty-six (26) of them, one for each letter of the alphabet. The 3 M’s of success are management, money and marketing. I think everyone wants success in life; business and career; however it takes a concerted effort to reach success. The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man’s determination.” Tommy Lasorda sums it up much better than I can!
I started this series because I run into so many people who have difficulty reaching success. They want to know my secrets! So I thought I would share them in a format that will be most helpful. I also think this format may make it more interesting and easier to use. My goal in these articles to provide useful and interesting information that will help you succeed. The 3 M’s of Success is now a series.
