The 3 I’s of Success is the ninth in a series of articles to help you reach your goal. What are your goals? I know you thought about it! You know, it is your dream, wish or resolution you made! Before you can get to where you want to be, you need to know where you are going. You wouldn’t get on a bus, train or plane without knowing where it was going.
“Success is a journey, not a destination.” My journey to success was filled with many goals. Remember success is the achievement of something desired, planned or attempted. Success does not always result in money. You can be a successful parent or maybe you achieved your diet goal or a performance. In my case, one of my successes was financial independence because it meant many more choices. I was no longer an employee unless I made that choice.
I am very curious and want to know about everything. I think I read more than anyone I know not just books, magazines and internet articles, but everything I can. I am interested in everything to the point I will spend hours investigating new things. College was a great place to investigate lots of things, but it is much easier now. I developed my skills to ask questions. I suppose I could take that skill set and become a reporter or interviewer, but I used it to learn about careers, businesses and entrepreneurs. I think it made me better and more successful.
I was always a saver! At a very early age, I saved my money for the things I wanted. As an adult I saved for my first house, apartment building and retirement. Savings for me was the first step to investing. Whether I invest in the stock market, real estate, collectibles, art etc, it starts with savings. My talent was in rental property investing and I managed to turn it into a business. Investments can be passive, but I am very active in making it a success.
If you just read books or listen to experts to find your passion, you will be dependent on what others think and say. Most successful people look for independence because they do not want to do what others tell them to do. I know I did not like being told what to do. Independent people are self starters. They do not wait for motivation, need to be stimulated or need to be managed. Is that you? If it is you will eventually be an entrepreneur. Are you a follower or a leader? Are you willing to take risks? Can independence be taught? I do not think so, you either are or not!
Investigate is examine, study or inquire systematically in an attempt to learn about something hidden, unique or complex. I always want to know about everything and ask a lot of questions because that is how I learn. It is a great way to learn about careers, investments or anything you may be interested in. I was always interested in money/personal finance and learned everything on my own. Have you ever wanted to know everything about a particular subject? Investigate to find out the cause and effect or just to become an expert. Success requires this skill.
Many people measure success in terms of money or wealth. Investing your savings so it will grow and help you become more successful is a necessary skill. Wealth is either an investment in your business or an investment in stock, bonds, or other assets. An investment is putting your money into something with the expectation of gain. Since we define success as achieving a goal, the goal is a gain when investing in an asset.
This is the ninth article in the series about success; I expect to publish throughout 2012. There will be twenty-six (26) of them, one for each letter of the alphabet. The 3 I’s of success are independence, investigate and investment. I think everyone wants success in life; business and career; however it takes a concerted effort to reach success. The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man’s determination.” Tommy Lasorda sums it up much better than I can!
I started this series because I run into so many people who have difficulty reaching success. They want to know my secrets! So I thought I would share them in a format that will be most helpful. I also think this format may make it more interesting and easier to use. My goal in these articles to provide useful and interesting information that will help you succeed. The 3 I’s of Success is now a series.
