How to Get your Dream Job

How to Get your Dream Job

September 10, 2010 by Krantcents

If you are unemployed or thinking about making a change, what should you do?  If you expect me to reveal my secret formula for how to get a job, read on.  Instead, I am going to start with your resume.  Most people reflect on what they have done and create a resume.  Is that my secret?  No!  I want to change your thinking, so prepare to make a significant change.  I want you to begin with the starting line and think about what you are trying to achieve.  In simpler terms, what can you do to make yourself more employable?  What skills, experience and personal traits do you need to acquire for your dream job or career?  Then start acquiring them, one by one.

The education can take a long time.  So think through what necessary education you need to get your dream job or career.  If you do not have it, start right away by going to school at night.  If you need specialized training, find out where you can get it.  The best way to figure out what education or training is needed is to ask questions.  Ask questions of those people who are in your career choice.  The same people can make suggestions about what experience you need.  Here is where you need to do your homework.  Ask questions of people in your career choice who are successful.  So you have the right education and training and experience, now what?  You need to acquire the personal traits!  Does this mean I need to change?  No!  You need to find out what characteristics employers look for in a good employee.  For example, soft skills are very important.  Some of the most important are a good work ethic, positive attitude, good communication skills, problem solving skills, confidence, flexible and adaptable, and team player.  So if you are short of some of these, start getting them and emphasize the ones you do have in your arsenal.
