First off, I would not consider myself to have the experience one should probably have at my age to handle unexpected events around the house, let alone taking on home improvement projects. I typically I call my father-in-law, who once built his entire house by hand, so tiny obstacles he usually laughs when I ask for help. He is, however, always willing to help out, as I am hoping it is as much of a teaching effort as it is probably making sure his daughter is in good hands. I will give myself credit though, that once I am shown, I can usually handle going forward, so I just need to make sure I continue to learn as much as I can, as a scary thought would be to one day have a son or daughter and not be able to teach or fix something that comes up. This brings me to my current project, redoing the entire first floor of our house. A tall order I know.
As I have spent just about every day over the past couple weeks after my normal job, working until late on the house. I did hire installation of our laminate floors, which after scheduling an installation date, gave me a pretty tight deadline to rip up the old carpet, replace some molding, and of course, paint. Now the floor installers offered move the existing furniture, haul away the existing carpet, and even remove the toilet in the bathroom prior to installation. This did come at a premium price (they wanted $75 just to take off the toilet!). So began my project of ripping up the carpet, padding, tack strips, removing staples, and sinking hundreds of screws to fix squeaky floors. Painting came next, with fresh coats of paint on the ceiling, walls, molding and trim. I picked up the 42 cases of laminate flooring this weekend and loaded into the house as it needed to sit in the house for a few days prior.
As I am finishing up and calling it a night the day before installation of the floors, I did complete everything I needed to, just not everything I wanted to have done, but I can rest tonight knowing that I do not have to scramble in the morning. I just wonder, was it worth doing all of this myself and not hiring someone? As my father-in-law asks, “isn’t it satisfying knowing you did it all yourself?” Yes? No? Who cares?
