Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day

May 25, 2015 by Justin

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States to remember the people who died while serving in the armed forces. It is observed every year on the last Monday in May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the soldiers who died during the war. It was a time to place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

Memorial Day is still a time to honor those people who died in war, but it is much more. It is a parade, outdoor concert, sales, the beginning of summer or just an excuse to get together with family. It is a three day weekend that can be celebrated in a variety of ways. It is also a time for sports! There is a lot of professional sports that you can attend or watch to add to your weekend. Many people use the weekend to start summer with the activities of summer. It is the start of summer weather and activities!

Summer not only means foods, activities and great weather, it also means vacations and more daytime. I think we tend to try to cram more things into our days during the summer because of the weather. I know more people barbecue during the summer than winter. More ice cream is eaten during the summer too. When children are out of school, we tend to want to keep them busy with trips or other things to do. Summer is family vacation time .

Although Memorial Day is supposed to commemorate those people who died in war, it is much more. American holidays are many things to many people! It represents what American is all about, the freedom to do what you want. Fly the American flag, thank a veteran, visit a local cemetery, or visit a national park. Some may just get together with family to barbecue or go to a concert and still others will do noting or take advantage of a sale. Memorial Day means different things to different people. Happy Memorial Day.
