Another 15 Coolest Jobs on the Planet

Another 15 Coolest Jobs on the Planet

September 5, 2011 by Justin

Here are another 15 coolest jobs on the planet? Since it is Labor Day, I am continuing my series on the coolest jobs on the planet.  As a reminder, I wrote a very popular article called “15 Coolest Jobs on the Planet” in July.  In honor of Labor Day, I searched far and wide and added 15 more for your enjoyment.

Wardrobe Stylist – This person select clothes for commercials, TV shows, movies, advertising campaigns, music videos, concert performances, and any public appearance made by celebrities, models, or other public figures.  You may be paid by the day, flat fee for an assignment, percentage, or retainer.

Biometrics – This is someone who works on methods to uniquely recognize humans based on one or more physical or behavioral traits.  Passwords can be hacked or stolen!  Your iris, fingerprint, facial recognition, DNA or palm print are just a few physiological traits that are unique.  Behavioral traits include voice, gait, or typing rhythm.

Car Reviewer – Reporter who test drives a new car and writes about what he/she thinks regarding the car.  This is an opportunity to see and teat drives new cars when they come out each year.  It may be an exotic sports car like a Porsche, Ferrari, or Corvette.  It could also be a series of hybrid cars or economy cars for a magazine, internet post, newspaper or TV show.

Medical doctor for Professional Sports – Perform medical duties with a professional sport teams such as the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB or MLS.  Doctors help athletes to avoid injury and treat those injuries to help the athlete return to peak condition.  Many teams have team doctors, just as many use outside medical practices that offer specialties to support the athlete’s health.

Formula 1 Chief – Run a Formula 1 racing team.  This is the person in charge of a formula 1racing team.  You are responsible for the drivers, cars, and all support for the team.  There 15-17 races per season around the world.  There are sponsors and purses for winning races to help pay for all that is involved.  Travel and sport is very glamorous and expensive.

Band Roadie – These are the technicians that travel with the band on tour and handle every part of the concert production except performing.  This includes tour managers, production managers, stage managers, engineers, security, truck drivers, merchandise and caterers.  This may sound more glamorous than it is, but you are with the band.

Biomedical Engineers – This is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology.  This has just recently emerged as its own discipline.  Much of the work consists of research and development of medical devices ranging from prostheses, diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices such as clinical equipment, micro-implants, imaging equipment (MRI/EEG), regenerative tissue growth and bio/pharmaceutical drugs.

Professional Poker Player – This is a profession where you can start part time working at night.  You need a bank roll, a lot of skill and some luck.  What else does it take to be a successful gambler?  You will need expense money to cover entrance fees, hotels, food and other expenses and then your bank roll.  What kind of player are you?  Can you handle the stress, volatility of gambling and do you have the skills.  Last, are you winner versus just a gambler?

Airline Pilot – Most commercial airline pilots work for the national and international airlines.  After about ten years, it can be very lucrative.  The job can be very glamorous traveling around the country and the world.  Most major airlines limit airline pilots to just 14 work days per month and that may mean being away from home many of those nights.  The airline Captain is in charge of the aircraft and can have you arrested, removed or banned from the airline.

Securities Traders – A financial services career that earns a “spread” between what they charge buyers and pay to sellers.  You have to act quickly in a high pressure environment.  Most of the positions require a bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of the business or economics disciplines.  Competition is keen for jobs, especially in investment banks.

Entertainers – This is someone who is hired to entertain people.  This can range from musician, actor, comedian, or magician.  This is a profession that is filled with a lot of people who are well paid and people who are underemployed and barely earning anything.  The odds are against you and you will probably spend years as a waiter or some other profession waiting for your break.  There a lot of these wannabes in Los Angeles.

Chef – A chef cooks professionally for other people.  What is the difference between a cook and a chef?  A chef is a skilled professional who is proficient in all aspects of food preparation.  Training can be years under a qualified chef or going to schools such as Culinary Institute of America or the French Cordon Bleu.  Many chefs are almost celebrities in their own right like Wolfgang Puck.

Spy – CIA field operative obtains information that is considered secret without the permission of the holder of information generally a government or it can be a corporation in the case of industrial espionage.  There are field operative positives similar to secret agents or analyst positions.  The position was made more glamorous by movies such as James Bond.

Professional Athlete – They play sports in front of an audience and get paid for it.  They play games at a very high level and face a constant threat of injuries and low performance that could end their career.  The average career is around 5 years depending on the sport and position.  Most professional sports athletes are very well paid, but have relatively short careers.

Race Car Drivers – They drive specialty designed automobiles (sports cars, Formula 1, or NASCAR) over tracks or courses of various lengths, designs and construction in competition races.  Generally, drivers are part of a race team and independently contracted by a team.  They develop the required skills by formal training and driving on race teams.

I looked far and wide to find another 15 coolest jobs on the planet.  I will leave it up you whether I succeeded or not!  Some of you may disagree and others may want to add your own ideas.  Feel free to use social media to let others know of the coolest jobs on the planet too.  You are perfectly welcome to leave interesting comments that equal another 15 coolest jobs on the planet.

a lot of great-sounding jobs. I wonder if the airline pilot gig ever gets old…? I am not sure I would want to travel that much. I suspect it would wear on you.

I think it is up to us as individuals to make our career interesting or exciting. I love to travel, but a steady diet of travel may be routine especially if it is overnight.

Great list. Since I work in the medical profession I have met a lot of biomedical engineers. They get to do some pretty cool stuff. It always amazes me what they actually invent and come up with. I like the idea of biometrics too. Sounds really neat. Makes me wonder about my level of security though.

The future is very interesting! Unless you have top secret information on your computer, what level of security is necessary?

A friend of my son’s tried the ‘professional poker player’ job (illegally, of course.  He looks like he is 25 so nobody checked his age.)  He did great at first and even considered deferring college.  Then a cool streak hit and all the sudden, he is at college registration now and dreams of getting rich from gambling are on the back burner.

Maybe I will quit being a computer programmer and become a spy, that does sound pretty cool!

Just remember that being a spy is not the James Bond version from the movies. The CIA has field and analyst positions that are probably no different than being a computer programmer..

These are pretty cool jobs, but a lot of them are very difficult. It takes a long time to be a chef and you work very long hours. Airline pilot sounds like a great job though.

The driver sounds cool, but it is not easy to win. Managing the team is like a company that has a very specific objective.

I used to play poker until the government put an end to it. I would eat steaks one week followed by ramen noodles the next. It was a roller-coaster.

Gambling as a profession is a tough one. Love the highs, but hate the lows. It is similar to commission sales.

Krants- I often dreamed of what it would be like to be a professional poker player.  I took a couple weeks off a few years ago and played poker all day every day on my vacation.  While I enjoyed it and did fairly well, it did become somewhat monotonous and I think I’ll keep it a hobby.  If that was my main source of income I can imagine it being quite stressful (with the money swings) and boring doing the same thing every day…..and not really contributing much to society.

I would love winning and hate losing! I feel that way and there is no money involved! Far too stressful for me.

“What do you do?” “Oh, I’m a spy.” How COOL would that be to be able to say that? Well, I suppose if you were a spy, you wouldn’t exactly go around saying that… At Mango Money, we recently did a post on Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women, and I came across another cool job title: “Monarch.” I mean, that would be a pretty cool thing to be able to say too– perhaps not quite as cool as spy or race car driver. But the women on this list not only had very impressive titles; many of their stories are inspirational, and even relatable! Check out our post on the Forbes list. Who knows, maybe you’ll land one of these awesome jobs and be featured in Forbes one day yourself! http://www.mangomoney.com/blog/trends/forbes-most-powerful-women

Real spies are not like the James Bond version! Many spies work at the CIA in Wash, DC and never leave an office. I bet it is still fun if you can handle the stress.
