The odds are against you to be successful. 78% of NFL players end up broke! How many people can even say they were a professional athlete? The odds are against you to make it to that level. The odds are against you to be an Olympic athlete too. The median United States household income is $46,326. Half of the families are living on incomes less and the other half exceeds this amount.
There are 110 million households in the United States and half earn less than $46,326! A few years ago, I read an TIME article that stated we need $75,000 a year to be happy. Does this indicate half of the people in the United States are unhappy? The study points out that there are two types of happiness. One is purpose driven and the other is self gratification. Doing good has a deeper impact on your well being versus just feeling good. It is not just money that makes you happy!
Some people think that buying lottery tickets every week is a form of saving for retirement. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 259 million. The odds are against you! You would be much better off investing the $10, $20 or more you play each week in the stock market and watch it grow over thirty or forty years. There are very few winners and a tremendous number of players. They think a $1 will win millions despite the odds!
Millions of people go to Casinos and think they will beat the odds. Whether you realize it or not, the odds are with the house. Although I recommend using index mutual funds because they have lower expenses, there are many managed funds that tout beating their benchmark index. I think any managed fund can beat the index at any time, but not consistently. In the long run, a good index fund with low expenses will beat a managed fund over time. The odds are against you to beat the index.
My mother and father beat the odds a long time ago! They came to America as immigrants without money and a dream. My dad came first to find work. He had a high school education and learned to be a tailor in Paris. After a short stint in the army, he found work and eventually started a business. My mother immigrated with a minimum education in the late 20’s. She started a business in 1929 before she spoke English. It flourished for twenty-seven (27) years. They beat the odds through sheer determination!
We all face challenges and some even succeed. Why do some succeed yet most fail? It may be determination or attitude or something else! I have students who fail all the time and have given up. I think it gets down to the question, are you satisfied with your circumstance? If you are, there is no reason to keep trying to succeed. Life is not easy and you have to fight for everything you accomplish. How do you handle failure? My students do not have the skills and they do not get the help they need to succeed.
Sports seems as though it is always measured in odds! Who is favored in the sports contest of the week or season or who will win the World Series or Super Bowl? It is often associated with betting, but it always indicates the favorite in a particular contest. I remember when the New York Giants won the Super Bowl XLVI over the New England Patriots (21-17). They were not favored and the odds were against them. One of the reasons, sports is so interesting is anything can happen on any given day despite odds.
Maybe the message is odds do not really matter! All those people do not believe in you do not matter either. The odds may be against you, but why dwell on it. After all, it is just someone’s opinion of a particular situation. Remember in high school, you may have had a category of “most likely to succeed” in your yearbook. I wonder how many of those winners actually succeed. They say the most successful entrepreneurs did not do well in school. Average people can succeed! Aren’t they beating the odds?
I remember once asking my parents about their success. I was curious to learn how they overcame the odds. Their answers surprised me! They either were unaware of the odds or they just ignored them. I think they never thought they could fail. They were so determined to succeed failure would not stop them because they would keep trying until they succeeded. So don’t worry about the odds, create a plan and work hard at achieving it.You can beat the odds, but the odds are against you.
